Frequently Asked Questions about Frozen French Fries and Potato Products

September 06,2018
  • 1.How should opened fries be stored?

To maintain optimal quality, tightly roll the opening of the bag to remove excess air, secure with a clip or rubber band, and immediately return to a freezer at –18°C.

If storing for more than a few weeks after opening, transfer the fries to an airtight, freezer-safe container and place in the freezer (avoid areas with frequent temperature fluctuations).

2.Do the packaging of fries and other potato products contain BPA?

No. Our product packaging does not contain BPA.

3.Why do fries sometimes turn out soggy instead of crispy?

    Common causes include:

1)Overcrowding the baking sheet or air fryer basket, preventing proper air circulation and creating steam

    2)Not preheating the cooking appliance

3)Using too low a cooking temperature

    4)Using a light-colored baking sheet or foil

5)Cooking fries that have partially thawed

Recommendation: Arrange fries in a single layer with space between them, preheat the appliance properly, and cook directly from frozen for the signature McCain crunch.

4.Is it really necessary to use a dark baking sheet as recommended?

Yes. Dark baking sheets absorb heat faster and distribute it more evenly than light ones, helping fries brown and crisp while preventing edges from overcooking before the center is done.

If a dark baking sheet is unavailable, parchment paper on a light baking sheet can help achieve a crispier result.

5.Why are there tiny slits in the packaging?

These slits are used to remove air from the bag before placing it in the master shipping case, reducing packaging volume and saving on packaging materials and freight costs.

6.Are McCain frozen fries already fried?

Yes. The product is par-fried in palm oil during production. However, all McCain fries still require further cooking before consumption.

Par-frying is a high-temperature, fast frying method used to prepare the product for subsequent cooking instructions.

7.How does freezing affect nutritional value?

Freezing helps preserve most nutrients. Our products are flash-frozen shortly after processing to lock in nutritional value.

8.Can products that have thawed before cooking still be used?

If the thawing method does not follow the recommended cooking instructions, we do not recommend using or consuming the product.

For example, if frozen fries are accidentally left at room temperature and thaw, do not cook or eat them. For food safety reasons, discard any thawed potato products to avoid the risk of foodborne illness.

9.Are the listed nutrition facts based on fries before or after cooking?

All nutrition data are based on the product in the frozen state as purchased.
